Reigning Champ Tuktamysheva May Skip Skate Canada

MOSCOW, October 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's 15-year-old figure skating prodigy Elizaveta Tuktamysheva may skip Skate Canada due to injury and growing pains, her coach said Tuesday.

Last year's ISU Grand Prix event marked the breakthrough for Tuktamysheva, who won the short program and came second in the free skate to claim overall gold in her first appearance on the circuit.

Tuktamysheva, who has been touted as a big gold medal hope for Russia at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, only entered that event to replace the injured Sarah Meier.

But she is yet to compete this season and may not be in Ontario to defend her title, coach Alexei Mishin told R-Sport.

"Liza had a back and knee injury. And another problem is her transitional age," Mishin said. "It's a tough period in the life of every girl, and Liza is going through it right now."

Tuktamysheva is scheduled to appear at the second Grand Prix event of the season, the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris on November 16-18.

"I feel very sorry for my conclusion of not taking my part to LEXUS Cup of China and Trophée Eric Bompard."
Her decision means that she has to abandon all advantages for participating next official competition "Yes, I will do my best as an active athlete," Miki Ando will come back on Ice next season.

Miki ANDO misses her entire season 2012-13

Miki: "I'm sure that the next season 2013-14 is going to be my last competitive season. I hope to perform in competition again, no matter what level of competition I would be in. I would like to give my best effort, showing what I have done so far - 100%."

I hope my fans can have the moment with my proud performance, in my last competition - it would have been these GPS. My fans should deserve it, as they have supported me for such a long time. And I'm not able to do that at this moment (without a matching coach), so I have to skip this whole season 2012-13 unfortunately.

I couldn't prepare for these GPS, because I couldn't reach the matching coach, as I had counted on Nikolai (MOROZOV). In March, he said to me "I wouldn't be available for your coaching next season," he hasn't confirmed that in person, but actually he isn't unable.

I hoped to get motivated little by little, when I signed the contract(of ISU GPS), otherwise I would miss GPS. Unexpectedly I had to sign it by May, so rapidly. I confirmed GPS withdrawal after previous ice shows on Sep. 15-16 in Niigata, I thought I would be nasty, discourteous to other Japanese ladies, who could be assigned to GPS.

(She's going to take a break for this entire season 2012-13, as she dismissed the ice show offer in Dec.)

If I leave from the ice, I may feel 'wanna come back' on the ice, a little bit.

(She will get started in Feb-March next year, waiting for ISU decision about her ban on ISU competitions.)

I'm not sure if I could make submissions to ISU competitions again, but I understand I won't be able to do that anymore. Yet, definitely I will do perform in a competition again (next season 2013-14), giving my last skate to my fans, no matter what level of competition I would be in. Now I don't think about competing in Sochi Olympics at this moment. Even I hope to finish my competitive career at National competitions, and my next goal would be All-Japan Nationals 2013(next season).

Being cast in a lot of shows last season, I was thinking of my next stage, after quitting competitive career. I got much more inspiration: I want to perform like this, wanna host the show like that. I guess such new inspiration caught me, therefore I couldn't get motivated for competitions.

"But, next season 2013-14, I hope to give my last skate, showing a competitor Miki ANDO, to my fans. That is confirmed, and promised. I have to be motivated to do that, to skate my heart out, showing my affections."

Saturday Night at the Movies
By Team IFS Published: 10/06/12

With less than 500 days left in the countdown to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia has appeared to propel their women’s singles star–making machine into top gear.

Some of their athletes dominating this and last year’s junior international scene include Polina Agafonova, Polina Korobeynikova, Polina Shelepen, Julia Lipnitskaia and Elena Radionova.

Further, a pair of 15 year olds already making inroads on the senior circuit, are Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Adelina Sotnikova.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva

Barely a week after turning 11, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva stole the show at the 2007 Russian National Championships. Though she placed only 10th overall, the protégé of Alexei Mishin already possessed many of the technical tricks necessary to succeed at the senior level.

It was soon confirmed, thanks to the wonders of YouTube, that the youngster was also landing triple Axels in practice.

What a difference a year made.

At the 2008 Russian Championships, Tuktamysheva placed fourth in the short program and first in the free skate, winning the silver medal.

Here, Tuktamysheva skates with stretch, confidence and a mature musical awareness to John Williams’ haunting soundtrack from the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha."

Adelina Sotnikova

Adelina Sotnikova won the Russian senior ladies’ competition in her debut in 2008, taking gold ahead of fellow baby ballerina and rising star, Tuktamysheva.

Trained by Elena Vodorezova, herself a child prodigy in the late 1970s, Sotnikova belies her youth with an on-ice presence and artistic finesse of a skater far older.

Like Tuktamysheva, Sotnikova is also a fearless jumper. Watch her land a three-jump sequence late in the program that includes a triple Salchow followed by a pair of double Axels.

Witness this remarkable 12-year old tackle the musical demands of Tchiakovsky’s "Swan Lake" with an inherent style and grace.

Tuktamysheva enjoys Canada, prepares to defend the title
October 23, 2012
By Vladislav Luchianov

Reigning Skate Canada champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva came to North America at the end of last week and now is intensively preparing to defend her title.

Among the top rivals of Elizaveta at the 2012 Skate Canada International, which will take place in the coming weekend, will be the rising Canadian star Kaetlyn Osmond, who won 2012 Nebelhorn Trophy a few weeks ago; 2012 World bronze medalist Akiko Suzuki of Japan and 2012 World junior silver medalist Gracie Gold of the United States.

Also, we should not forget that her teammates Ksenia Makarova and Polina Shelepen will also fight for the podium as well as another Japanese talent Kanako Murakami.

Elizaveta “Liza” Tuktamysheva is now in Toronto, where she’s training for the Skate Canada, which will be held in Windsor, Ontario from October 26–28. World Figure Skating had a short conversation with Elizaveta before her morning training session.

Image

Elizaveta, my first question is about your physical condition. Are you completely recovered from the injury?
- Liza: If evaluate my physical shape on a 10 points scale, I would put myself 8 points.

You came to Canada almost a week before the event. Is this due to acclimatization or to get better acquainted with the host of competitions?
- Liza: Yes, you are right. We arrived in Canada in advance to slightly adapt to the local time.

You are the reigning Skate Canada champion. In your opinion, in what the upcoming competitions will be different for you from the last year, except the fact that last year was your senior Grand Prix debut?
- Liza: I think the main difference is the experience. Last year I was an unknown debutante girl. This year I just have to perform like I can and not to fall below my level.

And what are your thoughts about the set of competitors?
- Liza: The set of competitors is not so important for me because my main rival is always myself.

Many Russian skaters admire the North American autumn. How about you?
- Liza: I’m in Toronto now and the weather here is wonderful: sunny, warm, no rain:) It’s just so lovely! And the skating rink, where I’m preparing for the competition, is very good!

A few words about your main purposes.
- Liza: I don’t like to predict events as well as make plans for the first place. The main thing for me is just to skate well my programs and then let the judges decide!:)

Editorial Note: This summer, ISU officially changed Liza’s last name spelling: from Tuktamisheva to Tuktamysheva. As Russian is my native language, I can say that the new spelling is more correct. But it would be also very desirable if ISU will make such changes at the very beginning of athletes’ careers.
