It’s the C(h)anadians: Chan breaks century mark, leads short by 20
Skating his first clean short program of the season, World champion Patrick Chan steamrolled over the competition at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, where he has been known to deliver some of the best skating in his career. He is currently in first place by an unheard of 20 points over his nearest competitor, breaking the 100-point barrier with his clean skate.
There was no chance that anyone was even going to be close to Chan after he hit his opening quad toe-triple toe and triple axel to start his short program. He slammed the door shut with the solo triple lutz and went on to bring the crowd to its feet with a spectacular performance. It was the first time in four competitions this season that he skated a clean short program, and the judges rewarded him well with a 101.33. He is looking for his fifth consecutive Canadian title.
Behind Chan but solidly in second place is former Canadian bronze medalist Kevin Reynolds, who landed his opening quad salchow-triple toe as he is trying to redeem his thus-far lackluster season. He scored an 80.81 with his strong short program, which featured clean jumps but was slightly marred by a messy camel-change-camel spin. Nevertheless, he is currently ten points ahead of the rest of the men.
Returning to competition after surgery derailed the second half of his season last year, 2009 bronze medalist Jeremy Ten fell on his opening triple axel but recovered to skate the rest of his program cleanly for a short program score of 70.81, just over two points ahead of Elladj Balde, who also had trouble with his triple axel.
